Gunmen opened fire on a private vehicle on Sunday in the southern Philippines, leaving at least four people wounded, a military official said Monday.

The victims were heading home when they were attacked along the national highway in Datu Unsay town of Maguindanao region, said Mayoraldo dela Cruz, a military ground commander.

Hurt in the incident, according to the military official, include the wife and relatives of a village official, Khus Sangki.

No one group has claimed responsibility for the attack but armed men believed to be linked with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and militias of a prominent Muslim clan blamed for the 2009 massacre of 57 people are active in the area.
