Over 180 trafficking victims rescued in Philippines

At least 184 victims of human trafficking have been rescued by Philippine navy and air force personnel from a ship that was to take them to Malaysia, officials said Tuesday.

Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Omar Tonsay said the victims were rescued around 11 p.m. Monday about five nautical miles off Barangay Ayala on board the ML Kadzrina which has 19 crew members, Xinhua reported.

The crew was brought to the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) headquarters in Zamboanga city for investigation. The ship, on its way to Sandakan in Malaysia, has also been docked at the NFWM base. Authorities were still determining what specific work the 184 victims were supposed to do in Malaysia.
